Ecology It is always Gazeley’s intention to have a net ecological gain from all our developments with an increase in habitat and biodiversity. Gazeley’s policy is to treat the planet as though we will be here forever and we have a team of experts to oversee our development.

If the Magna Park proposal does not get approved, the mineral extraction which has already commenced at the eastern end of the site will proceed steadily across the site over about a 15 year period. Under this scenario once the land has been dug for clay extraction it will be turned into a large lake with little habitat restoration. We believe there are many environmental advantages with our proposals which will provide more and better habitat for wildlife and cause less damage to existing ecology.
A comprehensive range of baseline ecological surveys, including bird and bat surveys, have already been undertaken. We have worked with Natural England to determine best practice methodology for surveys and assessments to ensure accurate baseline data is obtained.

These surveys will be further corroborated by work this year. Among many other things, we are aware of the need to protect any populations of spined loach and great crested newts. We hope to be in a position to release some of the survey findings later this year.

The neighbouring Nene Washes is a nationally and internationally important breeding and wintering area for wildfowl and waders and, through its diversity of plant and associated animal life within its network of dykes, has been designated as a Special Area of
Conservation, a Special Protection Area, a Ramsar site and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

We are required by European Directive to check that there will be no adverse effect on the integrity of the site or its features of European importance, so our ecological surveys will allow Peterborough City Council, as the decision-making Local Planning Authority, to undertake this assessment. We welcome these stringent regulations to protect wildlife and biodiversity and will make sure we meet them.
